Coaching Clients to Meaningful Daily Lives - by Kim Knight

Universal, everyday issues touch the lives of all of us. Daily living questions, chores, wants, needs, challenges and triumphs transcend all borders, whether they are physical, language, cultural or racial. No matter whom you are, where you live, how rich you are or what your age is, life happens to all of us. We all have commitments as citizens of our communities and of our world. However, we are all different and we need to find your own way and this is how it is for our clients. “One size fits all” as they say, does not apply here.

There are so many preconceived notions about how life “should: be lived. With so many messages that bombard everyone and your clients about how they should think, act and live, it is very understandable why it becomes so difficult for them to make their own choices. Days, weeks, months and even years go by when they feel like they functioning on automatic. Even though they want to do things differently, they do not know what it is that they can change or how they would change it. Clients wonder whether the activities they do and the lifestyle they lead matches who they are. I am sure you know what I mean. We have all been there and when your clients come to you feeling like this, you have that experience to share with them. They know that they are discontented and in despair, however they do not know how to find their own formula for life that works for them, and they are not getting any answers from those around them, either. The right questions will help your clients get started on what their personal choices, priorities and life commitments are. Powerful questions will help them move toward living life in a way that makes sense to them and makes every day worth living. Such questions may be; “If you weren’t stuck in a rut, what would that be like now?”, “What are you committed to?” or “What is it that you would really like to experience in your life?”

Find that question for your client that will get them unstuck, get them excited and enthusiastic about THEIR life. Help them leave their conditionings and expectations of who they are "meant" to be on a daily basis behind.  As a Yiddish Proverb says: “Everyone is kneaded out of the same dough but not baked in the same oven.” Help your clients live their daily lives as themselves and who they want to be.
