Blessings are Conditional - by Mary L. Weinstein

Most of us have heard preachers quote scriptures in which God promises us blessings, riches and honor.  But how many times have we heard these preachers quote the second part of the same passages where the word, “if” appears?  God does promise His people a whole lot of things.  However, when you study the Word of God, you will see that there are conditions to almost every promise or blessing.  Here are just a few out of the many I found:

Exodus 15:26:  Condition:  IF you listen to the voice of the Lord and do what’s right, IF you pay attention, and keep His decrees.  Blessing:   God will NOT bring on you any of the diseases He brought on the Egyptians.

Deuteronomy 11:22-25:   Condition:  IF you love the Lord your God, walk in all His ways, and hold fast to Him.  Blessing:  God will drive out all the nations from before you, and you shall dispossess greater and mightier nations than yourselves.  Every place on which your foot treads shall be yours.  More blessings are mentioned in this chapter.  However, in Verse 26 through 28 God makes it very simple:  I set before you today a blessing and a curse.  The blessing, IF you obey the commandments of the Lord; and the curse, IF you do not obey the commandments of the Lord but turn aside and go after other gods.

The most popular prosperity verses quoted are from the book of Deuteronomy Chapter 28.  Verses 1-14:  Condition:  IF you diligently obey the voice of God, observe all His commandments.  Blessing:  God will set you high above all nations of the earth.  Blessed shall you be in the city and in the country. Blessed shall be the fruit of your body, the produce of your ground and the increase of your herds, the increase of your cattle and the offspring of your flocks.  The list of blessings goes on and on until verse 13.  So many blessings and all you have to do is obey and observe.  It’s that simple.  And yet people are rarely told what is required of them.

In Deuteronomy 28:15 through 47, tons of curses are listed as consequences for disobedience.  This is something preachers rarely mention in their sermons.  Why?  Because many preachers today want to pump up people and excite them.  But where is the accountability and responsibility?

A child can easily sit back and get lazy when nothing is required of him and yet he is given toy after toy.  A child ought to be given chores and responsibilities.  When the child obeys and does what is required of him, he is then rewarded.  Otherwise, you create a disobedient and non-submissive monster.   It’s the law of sowing and reaping.  God is no different with us.  He expects us to do our part and He is more than happy and willing to bless us beyond our wildest dreams.  Next time you hear prosperity teachings, remember that you have to do your part in order to receive the blessings.
